Barach Obama paints himself as a man of differences who can bring change and hope, an impossible task in a congress of irresolvable differences. The presidents own background and behavior is conflicted on that level. He is slow to make decisions because he tests for popularity. He tries to be everything to everybody and he fails. That never works. At least George Bush could make decisions, even if they were wrong - and they usually were. The president is very good at oracular ambiguity, but that just tends to harden the resolve of those on either side of him politically.
It was a year before I went to work in the White House for President Eisenhower when Charles de Gaulle visited French Algeria in 1958 and in front of Arabs and Europeans in the midst of a war torn and suffering (of sacrificing and losing loved ones), he said: "I have understood you." The crowd cheered, much as the crowds cheered for Barach Obama when he announced he could feel their suffering and promised to change all that and he brought them hope. But grateful tears does not heal without actual change which reverses the course of behavior that caused so much pain.
Later I was stationed in France at COMZREAR and experienced the tension of the Algerian war. American were accused of taking advantage of French women since so many French men were at war or died and that left French women vulnerable to those horny Americans. French Americans were forced to leave France and NATO was also kicked out of France. We lost a son there and I was forced by the American government to abandon my law suit against the Frenchman who caused the accident since French-American relations were so sensitive and I had to give it up in favor of maintaining a rocky relationship with the French. (Read Who is Hank Roth?)
That was not my fault, but change and hope then meant sacrifice; something George Bush forgot about during the _wrong_ war in Iraq while we continued to lose billions of dollars which just turned up missing and gave millions of dollars, if not billions, to Iraqis to adopt our policies and like us.
Why did French women love the Americans, who many in Europe called the "ugly Americans?" It was not unusual when segregation was rampant in America to see Black American soldiers walking hand in hand down French streets and French whores welcoming them into their houses of ill repute. Ordinary French people didn’t like it. They attacked us during May Day. They turned their back on us when we entered their businesses. They didn't like us living near them. They didn't like having us in their country.
Early in Barach Obama's political career the polls indicated women loved him. They said he was different - He was like a political version of Johnny Mathis or Harry Belefonte, both of them also half Black and both adored by the public during their careers.
He promised change which just had to be more left than George Bush and who wouldn't want change after that wrong war and all the lies which led up to it, the secrets, the military contractors who acted like the Middle East was their wild west. And there was the outing of a CIA agent and the valuable assets who died because of it. Barach Obama promised change from all that and more tranparency in government. The problem with that thinking was, he wasn't all that different, except for having a Black father from Kenya and a White mother from Kansas and his politics hasn't changed anything - except bring us a third war. He has demonstrated he is no Martin Luther King, Jr and he is no Jessie Jackson. He may be more like Tiger Woods and we all know how that turned out. He just mastered the art of compromise and he danced with the stars of the Democratic Party. And he was very good at organizing people, a euphemistic way of saying, he was good at manipulating people to his own ends. He was a lot more acceptable to the mainstream than the outspoken, often left wing, very Black Jessie Jackson who incidentally I supported and was a delegate for at the Rainbow Convention in Raleigh, N.C..
To give credit where credit is due, Osama Bin Laden was captured and killed under his watch.
He stressed unity and when don't we need unity, except how could we unify around desperate and destructive policies of the right and George Bush in particular which favored the rich and brought more pain to the middle class and the poor?
Obama was promoted by slick public relations to vague promises of a better future while not changing much at all - while taking gobs of money, typical Washington politics, from the same old special interests which continually finance politicians on both sides of the political spectrum to insure the rich stays that way.
